The structure and sonic materials in Obedience School are derived from a 15-second recording of my family's dog. The onsets of different sounds, such as a bark, a breath, or a footstep, determined the proportions of formal divisions. Each section of the work focuses on a particular type of process with the original sounds, although the other processes will interrupt or emerge at times. The processes - algorithmic editing, drastic and improper noise reduction, time-stretching, etc. - were used in such a way to create a violent and degraded sound-world.
